Discobolus is a photographic project and artist’s book that explores the delicate tension between physical strength and mental vulnerability. Inspired by the classical image of the discus thrower, Rubens reinterprets the archetype of the heroic body through a contemporary and introspective lens. Using layered imagery, enigmatic lighting and subtle gestures, she creates a poetic visual language that questions traditional notions of strength, perseverance and identity.
Rather than glorifying physical power, Discobolus reveals its fragility. Rubens portrays bodies suspended between control and surrender, tension and release. Her carefully constructed compositions—hovering between staged and spontaneous, classical and contemporary—bear traces of exhaustion, tenderness and resistance. In doing so, she opens up a space for emotional nuance and ambiguity, far removed from the idealised image of the invincible athlete.
The visual language of Discobolus is minimalist yet intensely charged. The resulting images do not merely document a subject, but translate an internal emotional state—inviting the viewer into an intimate, reflective encounter with human strength and fragility.
The book was published by Hopper&Fuchs under the artistic guidance of Bruno Devos, and was accompanied by a fully developed exhibition.
